Romanian ID documents – a quick guide

ROMANIAN PERSONAL NUMERIC CODE /Cod Numeric Personal (CNP):
Each Romanian issued document, (birth certificate, Identity Card, Passport, Driving Licence) contains a unique identifying number for the owner of the document, legally referred to in Romanian as “Cod Numeric Personal ” (CNP): Personal Numeric Code.
The CNP is unique for each person. It is assigned at birth and never changes except in cases of erroneous attribution, sex change or change of status from legal resident to citizen.
The CNP consist of 13 digits as follows:
• 1st digit for gender and century of birth: 1, 3, and 5 = male; 2, 4, and 6 = female. 1 and 2 = 20th century, 3 and 4 = 19th century, and 5 and 6 = 21st century.
• next 6 digits for birth date in the format YYMMDD
• next 2 digits for place of birth (the code of the county issuing authority);
•  4 other digits;
